Barbie's Impossible Measurements?

So the other day I was surfing around on the internet and I decided to see what Barbie's measurements would be if she were a real person and not a doll tht has been enjoyed by children and parents alike for over 50 years. I read what her bust waist and hip sizes are which are 9.5 cm tall, 13.5 cm bust, 8.5 cm waist and 12.5 cm hips9.5 cm tall, 13.5 cm bust, 8.5 cm waist and 12.5 cm hips. And then I read what her measurements would be in real life:

And I quote;
"If we assume the 'real-life' Barbie to be 6 ft, then this gives a scale factor of approximately 2.44 inches/cm. This gives bust, waist and hip measurements of approximately 33, 20.75 and 30.5 inches, respectively." http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=1006032310828

So I thought hm okay...6ft tall with impossibly huge bust and head that she couldn't even stand up with...hm okay. That's a good "if" there

I then went to Wikipedia in search of more answers.

"One of the most common criticisms of Barbie is that she promotes an unrealistic idea of body image for a young woman, leading to a risk that girls who attempt to emulate her will become anorexic. A standard Barbie doll is 11.5 inches tall, giving a height of 5 feet 9 inches at 1/6 scale. Barbie's vital statistics have been estimated at 36 inches (chest), 18 inches (waist) and 33 inches (hips). According to research by the University Central Hospital in Helnski,Finland, she would lack the 17 to 22 percent body fat required for a woman to menstruate.[13] In 1965 Slumber Party Barbie came with a book entitled How to Lose Weight which advised: "Don't eat." The doll also came with pink bathroom scales reading 110lb, which would be around 35lbs underweight for a woman 5 feet 9 inches tall. [14] In 1997 Barbie's body mold was redesigned and given a wider waist, with Mattel saying that this would make the doll better suited to contemporary fashion designs.[15] During Barbie's 50th anniversary, BBC did a follow-up article on what would real woman look like with Barbie's proportion, and discovered real life model Libby would have 20in waist and 29in hip with Libby's 5'6" height, and 28in waist and 40in hip if Libby was 7'6" tall.[16] "

Oh? So it's a 1/6 playscale factor now! Silly Chicky_S for assuming if Barbie was emant to be 6ft tall. TUT TUT I SAY. So now to do some calculating of my own.

So here are some measurements for the modern 11.5" tall Barbie:

Bust: 5"
Waist: 3 1/2"
Hips: 5 1/4"
Shoulderto wrist: 3 1/2"
Waistto ankle: 6 1/2"

Now multiply those sizes by six...:

Bust: 30"
Waist: 21"
Hips: 31 1/2" (31.5")
Shoulderto wrist: 21"
Waistto ankle: 39"

So there you have it. the REAL measurements. Amzing how some people just round-up those numbers huh... SO anyway!

Also the Barbie would reach a height of 69" if you haven't worked that out already.

Here's something interesting;

"Women's measurements

The perfect woman was considered to be 36-24-36, measuring chest, waist and hips in inches.According to Size USA, women's measurements in 2004 averaged 40 inches in the bust, 34 inches in the waist and 43 inches in the hips. In 1941, the average woman's measurements were about 35-27-37."

WOW! So it would seem that Barbie's bust being smaller than the average woman's bust means it is in fact achievable! Wacko! Of course compare the waist sizes and it's a little different being impossibly small although I myself can put a belt on and shrink my waist to about 17" and still breathe freely. Also the hips are smaller on a Barbie meaning Barbie IS thin but it's possible. I mean just look at Dolly Parton. Some people say a Barbie as a real woman wouldn't be able to stand up because of her bust! Idiots!. So i'd say the points stack up like this:

Me: 7 points
Rest of the prejudiced world: 0 points

Hahaha!

For a closing statement i'd also like to list a few reasons why people shouldn't be so retarded about Barbie preaching bad or false images of beauty to young children.

1) It's a doll. And all dolls should be perfect and desirable in their own way. Just because you don't have her body or you're too fat or you weren't born like her doesn't mean you can go around stirring up the pot about Barbie being "too perfect" or "Spreading false images of beauty to young girls." Shame on you all who do that. Have you ever seen a Barney toy that wasn't a dinosaur? Or a Matchbox toy car that had a working engine, steering wheel, gears, and exhaust pipe that spat out real fumes??? I didn't think so. Barbie is a fictional character and fictional characters can be who they want to be. And everyone has their choice to be who they want to be which is what one of Barbie's slogans are!!!

2) Barbie has predominantly THREE markets. Children, Collectors, and Fashion Designers. Children are influenced extremely little by Barbie to be falsely beautiful. Compared to the other things out there that influence them to be thin and beautiful, Barbie is a tiny minority. Consider movies. There are thousands out there that preach that being thin and beautiful is good and the only way to achieve in life. Celebrities thin out to impossible sizes just to make money off of whatever they're doing: Acting, Modelling, Singing etc.! How is that for a role model! And compared to all the other things that influence children to be themselves, Movies, books, friends, parents, teachers, etc.
Collectors don't care about what Barbie's look like full stop. Usually all they want to do is make a LOT of money from the collection once Mattel discontinues a particular Barbie doll. Or they build up their collection into the ultimate collection which people pay thousands for.
Fashion Designers only want the thinnest most beautiful Barbie they can have so they can show off their designs on the Barbie and they can even sell those fashions on eBay or any other trade site. Once again, they are'nt bothered by "Barbie influences".

3) This may fit into Fashion Designers category but I think it's meant to be here. It's good to have thin Barbies because then you need less fabric to make the clothes meaning cheaper to make Barbies meaning more money rolling in. It's just easier to fit clothes onto a thinner Barbie anyway. And who wants a fat Barbie? EW.

4) Also, more of a sidenote, but if Barbies had a larger waist and smaller bust, they would look, in my opinion, rather boxy. :D

Yours sincerely,

K-Man.

  4. Slim Chances, I tried to go to your link but it was not found. :( And yay for you, K-Man! I'm glad to see someone isn't blindly accepting this idea of Barbie's anatomically impossible body without verifying. (As for the 1965 Barbie with the diet book, it was 1965, people! I bet there were a lot of things going on at the time that most of us wouldn't agree with now. They weren't focused on preventing anorexia back then because most people hadn't even heard of it before Karen Carpenter.)
